Styling short hair | Using an iron
Whatever technique you choose to curl your short hair, you will need to start with dry hair. When I need to prep my clean hair, this is what I do. After shampooing, I use a leave-in conditioner and a styling mousse. Then blow-dry and smooth slightly with a round brush. Once my hair is completely dry, I apply a leave-in serum as a heat protectant. This last step is important: don't forget to use a product to protect your hair from the heat.
Most hot tools come with a temperature gauge. When choosing the right heat setting, consider the quality of your hair and what heat setting you need to style it. Difficult to manage or thick hair needs a higher temperature than fine and fragile hair. If your hair doesn't meet these extremes, preheating your iron to a medium temperature (360 F) should be sufficient.
Size matters, so you need to find the right diameter tool for the length of your hair. The size of the iron determines the curl size and the size of the tool you need for your hair length. For example, if your hair is 1 inch long, a 1 inch or larger wand will not be of any use to you.
