Apex Legends sees a staggering increase in negative reviews after the premium battle pass debacle

Changes are coming to the battle pass system in Apex Legends, and the reception has been about as negative as you'd expect on Steam.

The new Apex Battlepass is PATHETIC… (I'M PISSED)

It was announced that starting next season, Battle Passes will be split in two, but will still cost the same amount. While there are significant changes that will give players who purchase both Battle Passes more rewards than before, many feel like they’ll be paying even more money for what they already have, and to make matters worse, they can only be purchased with real money and not in-game currency. The response to the initial announcement was already negative, and now that same response is trickling down into official reviews. If you look at the Steam community page for Apex Legends, many of the most recent reviews have indicated the beginning of a downward spiral in review scores.

The reviews pouring into the page all have the same complaint: players think EA and Respawn are being greedy and that the monetization of the game is ruining everyone’s fun. Some reviews have even gone so far as to say that they’ll quit the game altogether if the companies focus more on taking money from players than trying to fix real problems with the game, like cheating and a ranked system that top players consistently complain about. While all of the reviews still hold an overwhelmingly positive ranking, the most recent reviews are now listed as mixed.

Will the influx of bad reviews lead to a change of heart from EA and Respawn? The chances are slim, as it would require as big a move as the Helldivers 2 review bombing fiasco that prompted Sony to drop a mandatory PSN account requirement when the backlash became too bad to ignore. But bad reviews aren’t likely to change anything on their own: the only way the new battle pass system is going away quickly is if players don’t buy it.
