The developers announced on June 8 that the game’s servers would be down for 24 hours before the patch is rolled out to all devices. If you encounter the error message "Online play unavailable", don't worry. The developers are working on the issue and have informed fans on X (formerly Twitter) that the issues were due to "initial burst load causing some turbulence on launch day", so they are working on a fix for the issue.
