Countdown to TIFF | Julie Delpy

French-American actress and director Julie Delpy has tackled culture clashes in comedies before, in "Two Days in Paris" and "Two Days in New York," but never quite as grippingly as "Meet the Barbarians," which explores the journey of a Syrian family who find refuge in a village in northern France.

The film, which marks Delpy’s comeback after directing the Netflix series “On the Verge,” is set in Paimpont, a small town in France’s Brittany region that’s preparing to welcome Ukrainian refugees. But instead of Ukrainians, the town is settled by Syrian refugees, causing some tension among the locals and testing their liberal beliefs.

Charades is selling the film in Venice, which will be shown at the Toronto Film Festival. “Vermiglio” and “Their Children After Them” are also on the sales list.
